The History of Chernobyl

Tragedy Strikes

On April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine, near Pripyat, experienced a catastrophic nuclear accident. It was one of the worst nuclear disasters in history.

The explosion and subsequent fires released large amounts of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, contaminating the surrounding area and affecting the lives of thousands of people.

Aftermath and Exclusion Zone

In the wake of the Chernobyl disaster, a large exclusion zone was established around the site to restrict access and protect people from the dangerous levels of radiation.

The Divers

To avert more disaster after Chernobyl, divers drained radioactive water under the reactor. They faced high radiation, darkness and danger. Their selfless bravery showed human spirit.

The Wildlife

Despite high radiation, the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone hosts diverse wildlife. Few humans and no hunting allow animals, such as wolves and rare birds, to thrive. Nature reclaims the land.
